Merry Christmas - Underway On Battery Power

The USS Ulysses S. Grant - 41 for Freedom Tribute Boat got underway for the Titusville Florida Christmas Parade this past Saturday. To much fan fare and flash photography the boat made a amazing run until just before the halfway point at the judging station. So I guess I cant fly the broom for this underway operation.

We had plenty of battery power but the inverter failed and the backup inverter would not come up either.

The engineer (AKA Rich McDowell) is commended for giving a valiant effort in trying to restore power to the Christmas lights by hanging off the side while in motion.

We would have went with a noisy generator, but we thought we was being pretty crafty with the stealth battery system. Next year we will be snorkeling the whole way on the generator.

Snoopy VS The Red Baron - Submarine Christmas Style

Along with he Christening of the USS Missouri today. The TSR 41 one for Freedom Tribute Sub made its first Christmas parade underway op at Mims Florida this morning.

It was a fine Navy Day with lots of rain, which caused the loss of both port and starboard TG's.

So we were unable to play our planned music presentation and use the diving alarm. I actually got 3 blast on the dive alarm before the starboard TG (DC/AC Inverter) went down due to water contamination.

The rain did cause a low crowd turn out, but people seemed to enjoy the boat just the same.

We hope to fare better on the Titusville Christmas Parade Op next Saturday.

TSR Sub Makes Veterans Day Debut

Even though were not done, it was complete enough to meet are goal of Veterans Day.

We set up at the American Legion Post 1 in Titusville Fl on US 1.

I had to work that day, but my Brother tells me he had a happy crowd of people come by and look as well as people breaking on US 1 as they came by to figure out what it was.

Roll Out! and Road Test!

Before we got ahead of ourselves with final paint details and finish on the sub, we thought it would be a smart bet to get the trailer to a state ready to mount the submarine. Further more, since we have no well payed engineering staff to crunch numbers, we figure it would be best to take it on a mini road trip after mounting for data collection. This way we could see how well the weight was distributed as well as how the boat rides down the road with vibration. Basically a Hail Mary pass to see if 5 months of work went down the tubes as the boat broke in half going over a speed bump.

Well I am happy to report, the road test went well. We did have a minor fracture in the AMR 2 area, but we found out we are a little light in the front, which will be compensated later by the forward trailer build out.

We made a couple of stops for checkout, adjustments and to get gas, and we were turning heads everywhere. Its not every day you see a 16 foot submarine rolling down the road. I did have to give a few short history lessons on FBM submarines to a some people, but they really thought it was a awesome sight to look at. The number one question?

Does this thing really work?

Well if this thing really worked. I wouldn't be talking about it on the internet and maybe hooked up with a few South American drug cartel's for product submersible delivery vehicles. Then I could make enough money to make a real full size FBM submarine!

Anyway....

So now we will be able to put the finishing touches such as hatch locations and depth markings and a number of other details.

TSR and Boat Project Update

Ahoy fellow Submariners and readers of TheSubReport.com! TSR which many you might have guessed was not operating at full capacity for about a month. I was a victim of the current Recession (Really a depression) and had to dedicate enormous time and effort in securing new employment. Like I said, it took alot of work but I am really happy with my new employer. So things worked out for the best in which I am very thankful.

TSR in the recent week has ramped back up to full operations.

Now for the 41 for Freedom Boat Project Update.

The Project Build started back in the end of May and still progresses. We would like to have it ready for Veterans Day minus all the decals and trimmings which we hope to have that completed for the Christmas Parade in Mims and Titusville Florida.

I would like to thank my Brother Sam who is a Army Veteran of Desert Storm for his diligence and hard work to keep the project progressing while I looked for employment.

We still need donations as we have put alot of money into the project that we Technically don't have. (Credit)

If you have a few dollars during these hard economic times to donate to the project it would be much appreciated. We still plan to have Donors names on the completed project.

Completed fabrication of both ends of the sub. The front was difficult to model. Used Great Stuff to firm up the front to help mold in the metal. Also started to add bondo to hide seems and to shape and round off areas of the superstructure. I told my brother that we used EB green tape to do the job back in the day, but he went with the bondo anyways..

My brother an I have been throwing around the idea of building a large scale model of a sub just to see if we could do it. Plus we would have the added benefit of showing it in local parades or other community and educational venues.

We knew we would need a trailer to mount the sub and to transport it, which was the big hang up. So we put off the idea for along time due to no trailer. Well low and behold, my brother found a good deal for floor tile for his house in which a trailer came with the tile for free. So since we now have a trailer, might as well start building a submarine.

I recruited my neighbor who also has a great talent for fabrication to give us a hand. So the shipyard staff stands as my brother and neighbor as fabricators and I am pretending to be a design engineer of sorts. I have no fabrication or artsy talent at all, so really I am more or less like the expert that is on the side lines of a submarine movie set.. "Yea that looks pretty close to how it was." and I also make beer and materials runs too. I did get my hard hat from the yards from when I was decommissioning the USS H. L. Stimson. Sort of makes me feel like I'm important and fake being in charge of the whole operation.

We are attempting to build a 15 foot model of my first submarine the USS U.S. Grant but it will be a tribute to all the 41 for freedom missile boats. Depending on funding we will try to incorporate as many gadgets and functionality as we can, such as a operable rudder and stern and fair water planes, a few scopes and and at least one operable missile hatch.

The trailer does need a full refurb job, but it will be modified and rebuilt for the sub model in which we will incorporate displays and other submarine memorabilia around the trailer to create a mobile submarine museum more or less.

Walk on a Glass Deck 103 Stories Up? No Thanks, I'll Pass

My first Job out of the Navy was contracting as a Field Rep. for NEC America doing test and turn up on Sonet ADM equipment for multiple telcom companies around the country. Most of these telecommunication switch rooms are located in high rise buildings in all of our major cities.

The phone company technician or manager that would be assigned to me would always insist on a tour of the facility which usually included a elevator ride to the top of the building.

One problem.... I hate heights and have a odd phobia of elevators. So to be a good Representative of the company I would just suck it up and sweat it out as they insist on I taking a look over the edge to see how high up we were.

Most people don't understand my phobia, since I am a submariner who is completely at ease at test depth, which common folk consider dangerous. People don't realize that they are exposed to a lot of danger in there daily lives, like driving and flying which the danger is lessened by training, safety standards and proper operation. The danger of diving underwater on a submarine is mitigated by pretty much the same principals. Since a very small percentage of the population every get to experience a submarine ride, the thought of someone doing it for living is to much to comprehend.

I contribute some of my fears and phobias to the control factor. I feel I can control my fate on a submarine because I am a qualified participant and operator. For instance I dislike flying as well, but I would love to be a pilot. If I was properly trained and piloting the airplane, I would be more comfortable and enjoy the experience of flight because I am now in control of my fate.

Well back to the whole reason of today's entry, if you attended Great Lakes RTC for Boot Camp, there is a good chance you might have run down to Chicago after graduation and toured the Sears Tower.

The Sears Tower one of the tallest buildings in the world is a breath taking experience if you like heights. I remember taking the fast turbo elevator ride, which I despised all the way to the top with a few of my new shipmates from boot camp and slowly going to the edge to look down over the city of people ants. Now they have built a glass bottom observation deck to walk out on and look down to get the full experience of falling from a 103 stories up. I'm sure adrenaline junkies will love this, but I think I will pass and stick with the scary world of the deep.

U.S. Navy - Floating Brothels with Propellers

Michael Savage is none to happy about the Administration's and U.S. Navy's response to the current piracy situation involving a American cargo ship and the seizing of it's Captain as a Hostage.

Savage wonders what the Navy is used for if it can not sink pirate ships.

He says the Navy has become useless and now is just Floating Brothels with Propellers.
(I think he is referring to the integration of women on our Surface ships.)

Another comment says our submarines are only good for running into sand bars.

I like Savage but he is being a little hard on the Navy. Unfortunately the Navy can only do what they are given orders to do by regional military commanders and the President himself.

Back in my day, growing up in the 70's... I'm talking when kids had to be in bed at 8:00 and it was a treat to get to stay up for your favorite TV show once or twice a week, The TV Show "CHiP's" was King. After school, neighborhood kids across America would gather and fight over who was the famed motorcycle cops Ponch (Erik Estrada) or Jon (Larry Wilcox) while riding bicycles side by side.

Then you get in trouble for chasing down your little brother or sister and making a traffic stop and roughing them up a little bit..

Now Ponch was considered the cool one that got all the girls, but after a 30 year re-evaluation and watching a few shows again, its obvious that Jon was the more intelligent leveled headed one. I think I'm more the Jon type now.

Because of the amazing evolving Internet, you can now watch this 1970's classic on Fancast.com. Even if you not a fan, it's worth it just to see all the old cars. Your almost guaranteed to see a Pacer or Pinto in every episode. You can even enjoy the distinct 70's funk orchestra music that was ever present on most programming of the era. Sure did sound like my trumpet God Idol Maynard Ferguson was playing the theme music for "CHiP's", but I was unable to make the connection. Maynard did perform the high screaming trumpet work for "Gonna Fly Now" theme from the 1976 movie "Rocky".

Maybe "CHiPs" and the music amongst other reasons made That 70's Show so popular. At the time, the 70's just seemed like the lost decade.

ShamWow Guy Busted!

There is another Sub Blogger that shares the same religion as me who is a little closer to LDS Central (Utah) than I am. In my case, when one or both of your parents are from Utah you just might be a Mormon too. These days Mormons are everywhere, could even be your next door neighbor. They usually drive a Mini -Van (AKA Mormon Assault Vehicle), They can be overly almost makes you sick nice and bring over home made bake goods for no reason at all from time to time.

There is a couple distractions like the HBO series Big love, which gives people a false impression of the mainstream LDS religion, and Senator Harry Reid as one of our members. But here is a website that will give you the straight and skinny.

Porn Surfing and File Sharing Computing Nightmares.

I Hate being asked to fix some one's bogged down or non working computer. Mainly because the main culprit ends up being them or a teenager that has unknowingly turned there $1000 dollar or so silicon investment into a paper weight. The two prominent problems that I find when troubleshooting a computer is evidence of Porn Surfing or the installation of free Peer to Peer File Sharing software such as LimeWire for obtaining music.

Heck, I already feel like a dirty blogger for mentioning porn multiple times. At least it will get this entry googled up real nice.

If you want to know what File Sharing software will do to your computer, take a look at this recent news video.

So here are few tips to help you out.

1. Don't Surf Porn.
I'm not trying to impress upon you some moral conviction here, just that the spyware and other goodies from these websites cause more harm to your computer than viewing the porn itself.
The best code writers in the world work for the porn industry, so they are always creating nifty little programs for data mining and collecting credit card and other financial information. You will also notice a endless amount of pop up's and home page re-directs usually to more porn sites.

2. Don't install file sharing software.
See video link above.

3. Make sure you computers are in common areas in your home.
This one is in case you have kids around. Although you might of done a good job of making sure your own kids are responsible web surfers. A Innocent computer left alone with one of their Jihadist computer friends even for just a few minutes can wreak havoc.

4. Password Protect your Wireless Router.
If you use a wireless router for your home network, Please take the time to set up the encryption with a user name and password which is usually available with your installation instructions. This will prevent the FBI from raiding your home in the middle of the night because your neighbor was having a kiddie porn downloading Rick James freak fest on your unprotected wireless network.

5. If your a Liberal, disregard this entire blog entry.

Hidden Taxes and a Rant on the March to Socialism

It has always amazed me how little people know about how much they are being taxed everyday from the time they wake up until they go to bed. I bet your even taxed while your sleeping. People just go about their mindless lives as long as they have a roof over their head, a nice car and a HD flat screen TV to watch their favorite programming. All this keeps them distracted as the government takes over everything and slowing erodes their personal freedoms. The average Joe and Suzie assume they pay a small percentage in Fed and State Tax withholding in their payroll taxes and a sales tax when they make purchases, and thats about it.

If one would take the time to itemize their purchase habits for the month, you would be surprised that your gross income is taxed at 50 percent or better. They get you everywere you go and every service you use. From the gas you put in your tank, the cell phones, Internet, cable, water, electricity. God help you if you smoke or drink alcohol. All these and more have taxes and user fees from city, county, state and Federal attached. And as more of these save the world spending bills come in to play and all the local municipalities feel the loss of property tax revenues from foreclosures, these hidden taxes and fees will continue to rise while your watching American Idol.

So what got me on this Rant is the Orlando Expressway Authority, who in their infinite wisdom chose to raise all tolls in the Orlando area by 25 cent. Everyone is losing their Jobs, but lets raise the tolls. Just Brilliant!! You have to use the toll roads to get anywere because the city is over crowed and the infrastructure has not been able keep up. They say they need the money to purchase more bonds for funding to widen the roads were traffic builds up at you guessed it...The Toll Plazas. Plenty of concerned citizens try to deter the Authority from raising Tolls, but the inevitable was already decided before public debate. And now in the future they will no longer have to debate it in a public forum before raising the tolls again.

Its bizarro world world out there Shipmates. I cant even make sense of anything anymore.

And now its being said even if the government confiscated all of our earned income for the year,
it would not even come close to paying off the new proposed spending and social programs by the President at the State of the Union Address.

I guess I will just have to pray for the second coming and have Jesus show up and blow the whistle.

"Alright, that's enough!, Everyone out of the Pool!!"

Scrapping Cable TV for Internet TV?

Heck, I'm thinking about it.....

I already pay 50 bucks or more for my Internet pipe and I can get alot of TV and movie programing thru sites Like Fancast, Hulu and Joost. If I could find a live feed of Fox News, it would be a done deal. Probably have to upgrade from my trusty 10 year old Sony Projection TV to a HD flat screen for better clarity and computer friendly hook up.

I'm sure cable companies are not happy about internet programming.

It would be nice if you could just pay like $20 for your favorite 10 channels to a cable operator. One thing is for certain it will be interesting how TV and Internet are integrated over the coming years.

Rear Admiral Dean Lane Axene, 85, of Azalea Trace, Pensacola, FL, passed away on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola, FL. He was born in Kansas City, MO August 1, 1923, the son of Oscar and Marlowe Axene and grew up in Columbus, OH. He graduated in June 1941 from Upper Arlington High School, where he was captain of the football team his senior year. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy in July 1941 where he played football and graduated in accelerated courses on June 7, 1944. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy and married his high school sweetheart Sally Ann Haas on that same day. His early Navy career was spent almost exclusively in submarines. Highlights were: two WWII war patrols in USS Parche (SS384), post-graduate work at MIT, commissioning Executive Officer USS Nautilus (SSN571), Commanding Officer USS Croaker, Officer in Charge Nuclear Power School, commissioning Commanding Officer USS Thresher (SSN593) and John C. Calhoun (SSBN630) Blue Crew. Attendance at the State Department's Senior Seminar in Foreign Policy was followed by assignments related to international relations in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and on the Staff of the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic. Admiral Axene retired July 1, 1974 following a tour as Deputy Chief of Naval Education and Training. His awards included: Submarine Combat Control Patrol pin with 1 gold Star, Polaris Patrol pin with 2 gold stars, Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, Legion of Merit-3 awards, Great Star of Military Merit from the government of Chile. Following retirement from the Navy, Admiral Axene spent eleven plus years with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in the Pensacola Division providing support to foreign licensees in the design and construction of commercial nuclear power plants located in England, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Japan and Korea. He retired from Westinghouse in September 1985. Principal Community activities include having been a board member and officer of the following organizations: Pensacola Council Navy League, Naval Academy Alumni Association, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, World Trade Council and Scenic Hills Country Club. Admiral Axene is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sally of Azalea Trace, Pensacola, FL; son, Eric Christopher Axene and his wife Janet of Columbus, OH; daughter Kristen Axene Wenning, and her husband Ronald Wenning of Lewisburg, PA; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother David Axene and his wife Jana of Hilton Head Island, SC; and sister Dareth Axene Gerlach of Columbus, OH. ALEXANDRIA, Pa. — A church official says the clergyman credited with helping to push Congress to insert the phrase "under God" into the Pledge of Allegiance has died in Alexandria, Pa. The Rev. George M. Docherty was 97.

Nancy Taylor, historian for the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, says Docherty died on Thanksgiving at his home in Alexandria, with his wife, Sue, by his side.
Docherty delivered a sermon saying the pledge should acknowledge God in 1952 at Washington's New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, just blocks from the White House.

On Feb. 7, 1954, he delivered it again after learning that President Dwight Eisenhower would be at the church. Congress inserted the words a few months later.

Fla. student arrested after passing gas at school

STUART — A student at a Florida school has been arrested after authorities say he was “passing gas” and turned off his classmates’ computers.

According to a report released Friday by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the 13-year-old boy “continually disrupted his classroom environment” by intentionally breaking wind. He then shut off some computers other students were using. The Spectrum Junior-Senior High School was arrested Nov. 4. A school resource officer placed the boy under arrest after he confessed about his behavior, according to the report. He was charged with disruption of school function and released to his mother.

Alright my Dear Readers and Shipmates of TheSubReport.com and Decks Awash. As we all know, the economy is in turmoil and companies are pulling in the reins on spending and shedding jobs to help cut cost. I Currently work for one of the big Telecommunication companies that has been cost cutting and restructuring well before the economy went south a few months ago. Although things are looking better and they are good things happening with a possibility of a strong recovery in the next year or so, my company is offering Volunteer buy outs.

Why I consider this option, I am coming to my readership were networking is king to which some of you probably either know or are a manager for hiring positions.

About all I can offer is 10 years of rapid changing Telecommunications and Networking experience in Wireline, Wireless and VOIP fields. Other than that I use to be a steely eyed missile man (AKA Missile Tech) in which the pentacle of my Navy Career was a Instrumentation Launch Supervisor with Submarine Test Launches on the Cape Canaveral Range.(That was a real kick in Pants Job) So if you can use a Computer Telcom Network/Knuckle Dragger who is also not afraid to pick up a wrench and hammer and get a little dirty after provisioning a network, please let me know, and email me at eric@thesubreport.com. I would be happy to discuss my qualifications further and forward you a resume.

Note: I have yet to use wrench and hammer in the physical destruction of Telcom network equipment.

TSR Tours USS New Hampshire SSN 778

TSR had another Submarine tour opportunity at NOTU, Cape Canaveral Florida. This time the newly commissioned USS New Hampshire SSN 778. Since this Editor had to work his real job I sent in my TSR Field Reporter (AKA My Son Shawn) to document the visit. Since he can not drive yet, his Mom had to bring him down to the Boat tour. He brought a video camera to hopefully get some video shots, but the tour guide said no video taping allowed. So he resourcefully used his trusty back up Camera Phone. Hope you enjoy the photos.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Divers searching for the remains of Caylee Anthony on Thursday said they discovered a garbage bag that was held down by bricks and contained bones and toys in a river at an Orlando park.

Becoming an astronaut was a childhood dream for Navy Captain Stephen Bowen. Bowen eventually became a submariner after being inspired by Jacques Cousteau, and was the first submarine officer to be selected as an astronaut in 2000.

Navy Capt. Stephen Bowen hopes to put his ceramic tiling experience to work on the mission when he uses a caulk gun to apply grease to a jammed space station joint.

With the Commissioning of the USS New Hampshire ,I felt compelled to put down a few memories of my old boats and one ship.

It is odd for me to be able to say that I have been part of the decommissioning of all three sea going commands that I was stationed. Two Submarines and one Submarine Tender. I got my sea legs and qualifications on the USS U.S. Grant SSBN 631G. Your first boat just seems like your only boat you have ever truly served, hence the reason we always make statements like " that's not the way we did it on the USTAFISH." I had a little over 3 years on the Grant, being one of the last Boomer crews to do patrols out of Holy Loch Scotland. Looking back now, it was a great experience. Like stripping parts from Building 616 to get under way on time? Even to this day I miss Ferries Fish N Chips and I think it was the Argyle hotel pub or something and another place called the Dolphin Inn were us Missile monkeys got our pints of lagers, Bitters, Ales and Stouts. My recollections are not that good so maybe some others that read this might have better memories of Holy Loch and Dunoon.

When I left the Grant I cross decked over to the USS H.L. Stimson SSBN 655B in Charleston S.C. Not even a year later I took the Stimson around to Bangor and Puget Sound Naval Ship Yard for the same fate (SRP, Submarine Recycling Program) as my former boat. At my first chance, I went over to the dry dock were the Grant sat with what I think was the John Marshall and took a tour.

It was a sad sight to see for a boat that I sailed on for 5 patrols. The interior was almost completely stripped. Massive hull cuts had been made in several sections of the boat for equipment removal. I remember there was a walk out platform like a porch were a hull cut was made off the crews lounge. The missile muzzle hatches had been removed, and the hull split at the reactor machinery room one area.

It was a mind numbing sad experience for what they say is true, ships are alive with their own soul. And the soul had been taken from this old friend who faithfully served its country for over 3o years.

The Stimson was placed in a aircraft carrier dry dock with 3 other Boomer boats for disposal. They had to use a bunch of divers and laser sighting gear and 18 hours of maneuvering watch to sit all 4 boats on the blocks at the same time. Quite an amazing feat. I also remember we got in some trouble with the Yard Birds for some premature locker removal while we were sitting up at Sub Base Bangor after Strat -Offload. We were bored and felt we were just giving the yard a head start. Violated some union contracts or something with PSNS. Go Figure..

Then I was off to the USS Canopus in Kings Bay for two years were one of my new shipmates met me at the quarter deck and said welcome to Hell. Now Submarine Tender duty is definitely different than sub duty, but once you get use to the way the surface guys do business it's not all that bad. I found it somewhat like modified shore duty. But it's Still Surface Ship Duty. Surface Sailors are an uptight bunch. You actually have to use all those skills you learned in boot camp and be held accountable for them. There is a MAA in every passageway that is more than happy to correct your military bearing and appearance. They might even insist on writing you a fancy ticket that you have to go give to your Chief just to make sure your deficiency is properly corrected. Flashback to the Ustafish parked next to the Simon Lake, I remember the COB on my first boat would just throw the things in the trash and say "Go get a F*&^$#* hair cut!!"

One of my first days aboard said surface ship we had a fire drill. Over the intercom they Announced the fire at some compartment and frame number. I asked my new shipmates were that location was so I could head to the scene to assist with damage control. "Relax new guy! We have fire parties for that." So that's what the red shirts are for. Who knew?

No matter what command I was stationed, I always ended up RPPO as in supply.

So as the Canopus started to offload for decommissioning and people separated to move on to their next commands, I slowly assumed more supply tasks until I was the default Weapons Department Supply Officer. I had to document, transfer or dispose of thousands of Items, equipment and tools. I signed so many supply chits, I still have twitch in my hand to this day. I think I developed the fastest unrecognizable signature in the Navy.

Just before I assumed all the other weapons departments leftovers, I was just documenting and transferring equipment for the W-4 Missile Division. The Division Officer had to sign these chits as well. "These better be right Petty Officer Ryle or you better pray we don't share the same cell in Leavenworth!" So this is a good segway into the next part of this story....

So I find some old missile testing equipment and gear that ended up being from the Polaris missile era. I had a magic book for instructions on disposal of SSP equipment (Missile related stuff). If I remember right the magic book had the old Polaris gear still documented as being on board. So that was a good start. Dont want any missing warheads or anything. The instructions deemed these items cleared for disposal at DRMO. A month later or so the rumor mill had it that these items ended up on a boat that was headed to China. Guess who the "G" men(DCIS) come looking for? You got it, yours truly. "Petty Officer Ryle, report to the T-Shed Supply Office!" So I look over and see these guys in suits, badges and guns and I'm crapping my pants scrambling for my magic book. The SSP magic book would be my only savior. So nervously I show the "G" men I did exactly as instructed. Once they saw my paperwork they put their guns away and called off the black helicopters and said carry on.(Ok, thats a little embellished, they were actually nice but still intimidating.) I expected to have more inquires after that even when I went to my next command, but I guess those were the only assets the Chinese were lucky enough to get their DRMO sniffing hands on. I'm sure it was customs that stooped them from taking the stuff. Like I said before, it was pretty old antiquated useless junk, but one mans junk is another mans treasure as they say.

The Canopus Decommissioning Ceremony was a Grand event with much Pomp and Circumstance, trimmings and fanfare. Officers and Sailors in full dress uniform as far as the eye could see. They even had veterans from the first USS Canopus scuttled in WWII. Great remarks were made by both of that currently served and served on board in her past. A fitting tribute to a once proud ship.

Days after the decommissioning ceremony it seemed ghostly to walk her decks. There wasn't very much crew left and you could feel once again a soul was leaving the ship. So I guess that's how it has always worked over our long and proud Naval History. Out with old and in with new.

Thanks for taking a short walk down memory lane with me. Perhaps some of your experinces might be the same.

Deserving of their own blog entry, I wanted to post this video for Satellite High School's Marching rendition of South Pacific. You will see that most of the band is dressed in Navy Dungarees or Navy Nurse Uniforms. About half way thru the show you will see a dance with a Navy Officer and his Girl and a funny shower scene. This Band always puts on great Marching/Stage Shows with outstanding supporting props constructed by their Band Parents Association, in this case a working Volcano. SHS Marching Scorps earn Superior Rating at Marching Districts

Under the direction of the 2008-2009 Drum Major Mr. Adam Drake, the Satellite High School Marching Scorps earned a Superior rating at the 2008 District 10 MPA on October 25,2008. They took the crowd to the South Pacific during WWII where there was a special top secret mission brewing, however all the sailors could think about was how to get to the off limits island named "Bali Hai". Love was blooming between our favorite Navy Nurse Nellie Forsbush and local French plantation owner Emil DeBec. They were in for a rocky romance but as with most musicals Love Prevailed!

I really enjoy volunteering for the community. Maybe some day I can run for President as a former community Organizer. Anyway, for the past 5 years, one of my favorite projects has been fund raising and working with the Astronaut High School Band. Florida Today Stopped by my Concession Stand at Friday night's game and snapped some photos of the hard working Band Parents.

A rain storm came in that night, but despite the bad weather the show must go on. Astronaut War Eagle Band Played in the rain and still received a Superior rating for their montage of Queen Classics. You can see a better video of the band at this contest in which the band took First Place. You might like our Fight Song here, it is conspicuously just like the old Budweiser song.

Now this next band I had to post because this is some what Navy related. Satellite High School Band puts on these great Marching/Stage shows every year. This year was South Pacific.

The Band was dressed up in traditional Navy Dungaree uniforms and the girls wore Navy Nurse outfits. They even had a working Volcano.

Here we go again with female teacher sexcapades. This is an incredible Phenomenon that has developed over recent years as reported by the World Net Daily's The Big List: Female Teachers With Students. This is just a result of demoralization of the country and our youth. Just about all our entertainment and media venues are over sexualized creating a dilemma for our society on what proper morals and behavior should be. Now I don't want to ruin the fun for the teen age boys that may or may not be reaping the benefits of the new Female Teacher/Student relationship, but perhaps the best way to curb some of these incidents is to properly punish Female sexual offenders. If you take a look at the WND Big list, you can see a great deal of these Teachers get off with light sentences.

Case and Point

This Male Teacher was recently sentence to six and a half years in prison, plus four years probation.

This Female Teacher Avoids Jail Time with five years probation.

Going back on the topic of demoralization. The other factors in this problem is the lack of discipline controls available to schools and bad parenting. So maybe the Teachers are reverting to the old saying if you cant beat them join them.

If you don't think there is a problem with the over sexualization of our youth, I suggest you attend a Local High School Football game. Observe the students, most of whom are not there to watch the game but to socialize. See how they dress and put your self in earshot of their conversations. You wouldn't believe the stuff these kids talk about. As a parent and school volunteer at my local school, I am privy to this environment that good kids have to survive and somehow get an education. One of our Administrators has a great tactic he uses at football games. He walks up to a group of kids and says I will give you 10 dollars if you can tell me the score of the Game. I have yet to see anyone claim that prize.

I guess Van Halen of the early eighty's were visionaries. "I'm Hot for Teacher!"

Allow me to preface this by saying that I am a lifelong registered Democrat. That is a fact that I am proud to proclaim.

The Democrat Party that I joined in 1964 was peopled, mostly, by honorable politicians like Wendell Ford of Kentucky, Tip O’Neil and Hubert Humphrey. These were people who did not duck questions or refuse to answer.

I have written to Senator Obama, Senator Ried. And Representative Pelosi. I either get no answer or less than an answer with a rehash of what they have said and/or done to spark the questions.

The words and deeds of these leaders of my Party are a matter of record, so I don’t need or want a re-itteration. The questions are simple and are as follows.

Why do you want to lose the war on terror?

Why do you want to tax the people who provide jobs to the point that jobs will be eliminated or sent overseas?

Why do you feel that socialism is the answer to all problems.

These are not questions asked from ignorance but are based on the acts and or words of the Leaders of my party. Perhaps there are reasonable and important answers to these questions. I am willing to listen to and consider direct answers that honestly address them. Since I cannot get anyone in positions of leadership to give me answers, I can only surmise and what I come up with scares me.

Perhaps if enough people ask these questions, we will get answers.

All of the elected officials that I have communicated with (of both parties) claim that they want to serve the people of this wonderful country.

Where I was born, service is what a bull does for a heifer, and quite frankly I, for one, have had about all that I can stand.

Is Your Presidential Candidate Qualified for the PRP?

I had a recent interesting conversation with a Shipmate and coincidentally a Obama Supporter. We were doing are typical diatribe on the politics of Obama vs McCain and came to the realization the best way to clean up this whole election process for President is to subject the potential candidates to background checks as required by the military. They should be done in the same manner and to the level based on what information they would have access too. Since the President is the senior person in the chain for the use of Nuclear Weapons, he or she would be subject to the PRP program and furthermore have to pass for a SSI clearance which is the same for the very people that protect the President.

(Source Wikipedia) Personnel Reliability Program (PRP) is a United States Department of Defense psychological evaluation program, designed to permit only the most trustworthy individuals to have access to nuclear weapons.

1. The Department of Defense shall support the national security of the United States by maintaining an effective nuclear deterrent while protecting the public health, safety, and environment. For that reason, nuclear-weapons require special consideration because of their policy implications and military importance, their destructive power, and the political consequences of an accident or an unauthorized act. The safety, security, control, and effectiveness of nuclear weapons are of paramount importance to the security of the United States.

2. Nuclear weapons shall not be subject to loss, theft, sabotage, unauthorized use, unauthorized destruction, unauthorized disablement, jettison, or accidental damage.

3. Only those personnel who have demonstrated the highest degree of individual reliability for allegiance, trustworthiness, conduct, behavior, and responsibility shall be allowed to perform duties associated with nuclear weapons, and they shall be continuously evaluated for adherence to PRP standards.

The PRP program evaluates many aspects of the individuals work life and home life. Any disruption of these, or severe deviation from an established norm would be cause to deny access. The denial might be temporary or permanent.

Now we can discern from this that Obama would have problems passing SSI Background checks and PRP standards. The possible affiliations to the corrupt individuals and accusations you see in the news would create serious road blocks. All these issues would have be investigated and determined before granting a clearance and admission to the PRP program. Obama's admitted use of cocaine would be a possible disqualifier alone. Likewise for our current President George W. Bush would have some issues as well with a DUI arrest and admitted abuse of Alcohol.

Some of you may remember the application for your background checks. I remember specifically being required to list 10 friends as references. Then Defense Investigator Services interviewed those individuals and asked them who else I knew, so they could dig deeper and get a accurate character reference. I ask again could our current politicians and presidential Candidates pass such scrutiny?

But the Constitution only states these basic requirements:

Be a natural-born citizen of the United States

Be at least thirty-five years old

Have been a permanent resident in the United States for at least fourteen years.

Maybe it would have been different if the Framers had any notion of the Presidential responsibility for the stewardship of Nuclear weapons.

So we can debate the issues if you want, but at the end of the day, Before you vote, is your Candidate truly qualified and responsible. Do they meet the minimum requirements that you or I would have to have for access to classified information and Nuclear assets. Just simple questions to ask your self before voting for the next Commander and Chief of the United States.

Reunited With The Past

Commander Cris Treharne, Commanding Officer of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit, Keesler Air Force Base, MS, reunites Richard Halloran, LCDR, USN (Retired), with a piece of his past he has not seen in sixty three (63) years.

Richard was the Chief-of the Boat on the USS S-20(SS125) at its decommissioning in 1945. As fate would have it Commander Treharne's command has the Ships Bell from the USS S-20 (SS125) on the quarterdeck of their building at Keesler AFB. Mr. Halloran, who retired, as a LCDR is a Life Member of both Submarine Veterans of WWII and the United States Submarine Veterans Incorporated. He resides in Gulfport and is a member of the USSVI Tullibee Base of Mississippi. Locating this bell so close to his current residents is an indication of how close nit the U.S. Submarine Force really is.

All of our volunteers made it safely through hurricane IKE although
the losses were devastating for some. Some returned to
Galveston to find their homes swept away.

The situation at our Seawolf Park is grim as well. We lost some of the buildings including the storage container of artifacts. The ships floated out of their berths and didn’t make it back into
their trenches. Our Destroyer Escort is listing dangerously to starboard.
While the ships look sound, a great deal of work will go into restoration of the exhibits. Some of our volunteers are already at work and look for your help.

(Wikipedia) International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) is a parodic holiday invented in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Corv allis, Oregon, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. For example, an observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello," but with "Ahoy, me hearty!" The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized view of the Golden Age of Piracy.

According to Summers, the day is the only holiday to come into being as a result of a sports injury. He has stated that during a racquetball game between Summers and Baur, one of them reacted to the pain with an outburst of "Aaarrr!", and the idea was born. That game took place on June 6, 1995, but out of respect for the observance of D-Day, they chose Summers' ex-wife's birthday, as it would be easy for him to remember.
At first an inside joke between two friends, the holiday gained exposure when John Baur and Mark Summers sent a letter about their invented holiday to the American syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry in 2002. Submariner and now Astronaut Steve Bowen is closer to making history as the First Submariner in Space. Although the roll out of STS 126 Space Shuttle Endeavour has been delayed, Capt. Bowen's ride should roll out to Pad 39B Friday. Endeavour will later be Launched to the International Space Station in November.

Endeavour will be on standby when Atlantis blasts off from neighboring pad 39A on a mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. It would only be launched on a rescue mission if Atlantis sustained damage that endangered the ship and its crew.

Stormy weather delays Endeavour rollout

The chance of bad weather overnight prompted NASA officials to push back rollout of shuttle Endeavour at least 24 hours.Launch managers met tonight and were concerned thunderstorms north and south of Kennedy Space Center might creep into the area and damage the spaceship during a seven-hour move from the Vehicle Assembly Building out to launch pad 39B.The shuttle had been slated to begin the 4.2-mile trip at 12:01 a.m. The start of the journey is tentatively being rescheduled for the same time Friday.

Bowen is the first Submarine Officer selected by NASA. He was selected as astronaut candidate in July 2000. He reported for training at the Johnson Space Center in August 2000. Following the completion of two years of training and evaluation, he was initially assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Station Operations Branch while awaiting assignment to a Shuttle fligh as a Mission Specialist. Bowen was originally assigned to STS-124 but was moved to a later flight to allow the Shuttle to rotate an ISS crew member. Grandson of World War II Hero and Second Generation Submariner Receives Dolphins

Retired Machinist Mate Senior Chief (SS) Henry Kanahele, plank owner, USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) pins the Submarine Warfare breast insignia on his son, Electronics Technician 3rd Class (SS) Nanikamaikaiamekaoluoluokanoho-Lokahipuanaonahoahanau Kanahele at a ceremony at the submarine piers, Friday, Sept. 5. The Kanahele’s father and grandfather Ben Kanahele, was awarded the Purple Heart and the Medal of Merit in 1945 for heroism on the island of Ni’ihau following the attack on Pearl Harbor. According to the junior Kanahale, keeping up the family tradition was a no-brainer. “This was awesome,” said Kanahale. “It was indescribable to have my father pin on my dolphins; all my hard work has finally paid off.”

This letter will serve as a request for your assistance in helping me continue and complete an endeavor to commemorate our time as Submariners. As I am sure you will all agree the time spent in the Submarine Service was without a doubt one of the highlights of our time on this Earth. Despite the long hours, family separations, danger, stress and confined spaces, its hard not to look back fondly at our time in the “boats”.

Part of that fondness and respect is knowing that what we were doing was important. For you “elder” submariners it was fighting an enemy that had attacked our country and was determined on world domination. For us Cold Warriors it was knowing that we were the front lines in the battle to contain the spread of Communism and provide the world with a better alternative. And todays Submariners find themselves in a very different fight, that involving the global fight against terrorism.

But even more motivating than all of this was the thrill and uniqueness of being part of that submarine crew. What kept bringing us back to the hardships of sea duty was that internal gratification of being part of an elite group of sailors. Sailors who, more than in any other discipline, had to rely upon each other for their lives. You had to have complete and unadulterated confidence that when you went to your rack for a few hours sleep, that those shipmates on watch literally held your life in their hands. I for one always slept soundly, if not for long, knowing the finest shipmates in the Navy stood the watch.

I have always felt it was important to get the story of our submariners out to the public. Clearly I am not alone in that respect as over the last 10 years or so an increasing number of books have materialized with accounts of the magnificent activities of our submarines and the men who manned them. Admittedly these have been written by Submarine heroes and experts from their unique perspective. These books cover the innumerable heroic activities of our submarines from the Civil War to today, again very important information that the American public has not been privy to previously from the ”Silent Service”.

What hasn’t been adequately addressed is the more personal side of our time in submarines. That is the gist of my efforts. To meet that goal I would like to get as much input as possible from the submarine community and its veterans to make that happen. My goal is to gather and publish those “ sea stories” unique to the Submarine Service that we all have experienced on patrol and deployment. How often have we thought of those times we sent a young seaman searching the boat with a request chit for some “relative bearing grease” or 600 feet of “waterline”.

Therefore I hereby humbly ask that you pass this request along to your members so that they may submit their memories and stories of their time in submarines. This can include sea stories, personal anecdotes, family grams or just any fond memory that portrays the personal side of the submarine force. Please include name and boat so that proper acknowledgement can be made. My intention is to have these stories published to put a more personal face on a force that until recently has reveled in its anonymity. It’s important that we get this story out especially as we continue to lose those aging submarine heroes of World War II whose stories would otherwise be lost forever.

Your assistance in this effort is greatly appreciated. As a career submarine officer myself I greatly look forward to your inputs in this both personal and professional endeavor. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
